(Update #2)
Final Word
I will say this one more time, as it seems my criticism has incited a few people to come here and hurl personal insults at me. I’m still trying to decide which comment was the most hilarious, but I haven’t come to a conclusion yet.
Anyways, my intent here was certainly not to insult anyone, though plenty of insults have been thrown at me for writing about this. But my fire shield is solid so I can take it. This was not an error on Funcom’s part, but a policy they have regarding any kind of payment on an account.
If a payment fails for anything….server transfer…name change…whatever…their policy is to freeze the account even if the payment has nothing to do with your actual subscription. That was part of the email they sent me explaining what happened, as you can see below. I don’t really think this is good policy, but that is just my opinion and you can take it or leave it.
On the upside, Funcom did do right by me and unfroze the account. So for that I thank them and for all the hard work they have done making AOC a better game for all. I can disagree with one of their policies and still enjoy their work. It is possible to do that in case some people are unaware.
So I don’t have much more to say about this other than I disagree with the policy. I would have no problem if they froze an account for a subscription payment failure, as that would make perfect sense! But their policy is to do so for any kind of payment failure. That just doesn’t sit right with me and I think they should change it. But all is well and Funcom treated me right at the end of the day by unfreezing the account, so kudos to them.
So trolls and non-trolls alike, get out out there and enjoy your expansion already!
(Update #1)
I just received an email from Funcom stating the following…
Greetings, Thank you for contacting Funcom Customer Support. I have removed your failed payment for the expansion upgrade and your account has been unfrozen. I apologize for the inconvenience. Anytime there is a failed payment for gametime or any other service, the account is frozen until the outstanding payments have been paid. If you have any more questions or concerns, please reply to this e-mail without changing the Subject line. Have a wonderful day.
Why would they freeze an account in the first place if a payment fails for something non-subscription related? That just doesn’t make sense. However, they did right the situation and unfreeze my account so I sent a polite email to thank them for doing so. This has nothing to do with Age of Conan, the game, of course. There are many hard working people who have been doing a great job at improving AOC and making it a fun place to spend some time.
I am proud of those people and the work they have done. Their dedication has helped AOC to grow and become a stronger MMO. But I have received a healthy dose of flame and insults for talking about this, but that really comes as no surprise. I understand that some people simply feel that they must jealously defend “their game” and the company that makes it no matter the facts or situation.
But as you can see…this was not an error…and while I do appreciate that Funcom righted the situation, I still think that freezing an account for a payment failure on something non-subscription related is a poor practice to have. But to each his own, I guess.

So apparently, if you don’t buy the latest Age of Conan expansion then Funcom just freezes your entire account.
I don’t really know what to say about these guys anymore. I continue to give them chance after chance and they just continue to fall all over themselves. So let me catch you guys up. Recently, I bought a 60 day subscription card at Gamestop for Age of Conan. I applied the card to my account on May 3, 2010. So on my account page, it says that the next payment is due on 07-03-2010. Ok, everyone with me so far?
Now, I actually use a prepaid Mastercard for all my gaming transactions. This came in very handy when I got overcharged during the Mythic fiasco because I didn’t get hit with overdraft fees. Age of Conan’s expansion, Rise of the Godslayer, is being released today. I pre-ordered it directly from Funcom using my Mastercard, but was informed the charges would not go through until about 5-7 days before the expansion would be launched.
Unfortunately, something came up in RL at the last minute and I had to withdraw those funds from my card. Real life is more important than gaming, after all. No problem, I thought, the charge won’t go through and I will just have to wait until I get paid before I can buy and play the expansion. Oh no, says Funcom, because when the charge for the expansion didn’t go through they decided to freeze my entire Age of Conan account. I can’t play anymore.
I got an email from them this morning.
Dear Age of Conan customer, We are sending you this mail to notify you that your account was frozen on May 11, 2010. Since your subscription was not canceled, the reason for this freeze may be due to a failed payment transaction. Please log in to https://register.ageofconan.com to either purchase additional game-time or check for the following: * Check your card has not expired, if so please enter a new payment method under the “Change My Payment Option” menu-choice. * If you have been sent a replacement card by your bank you may also need to re-enter your details. * If paying via PayByCash: Check menu option “View my Subscription”, “View Subscription Payment History” to ensure that no action is required. * Check that your Billing Address matches the address your credit card is registered at. * Check that the available balance on your credit card is sufficient. * If all of these have been checked please visit the Check menu option “View my Subscription”, “View Subscription Payment History” and try to resubmit your payment. If none of the above helps you solve this issue, please send an e* mail to account@ageofconan.com including your account name (but not your password). Best regards, Funcom
Since I was unable to purchase the expansion they have decided to not only deny me the expansion (which is expected and fine), but they also think that I no longer have the right to play Age of Conan even though I already paid them for 60 days of game time. I give to you, the hilarity of my account page. Notice that they froze me today, but you can clearly see that I have paid them to play until 07-03-2010. Look under Next Payment Date…it shows July 3, 2010.
Alas, Failcom has struck again. I paid them for 60 days of game time and they froze my account just because a charge for the expansion didn’t go through. So let me ask a question to Funcom since they feel that I no longer have the right to play their game. Do you plan on freezing the accounts of everyone else who fails to buy the expansion, or am I just a unique case?
These guys must really hate money or something.
If this is some sort of account error I will let you all know and recant, of course. But stuff like this just burns me after so many years. This is not the first issue I have had with Funcom either, so that also increases my anger. They have some talented people working there but they just can’t seem to get their act together in the PR/Customer Service department.

I like how u edit the picture, but u forgot to do it in the address bar….
rofl Not like its a surprise name. *grins*
Also in the copypasta email too. :p
Also, it’s Funcom. They eat accounts like yours for breakfast. There’s very few companies out there that I trust anymore for not being D-bags. FUcom doesn’t make the cut. =/
It is bizzare, isn’t it? My guess is it has something to do with their website registering a failed payment and then just freezing the account without realizing it’s not a failed subscription payment, just an expansion. Until I hear back from then we won’t know.
It looks like a billing error, pretty obvious to me at least, and I would think people would contact them and ask them before making an statement like this. Its hard to have sympathy when its probably an error in their system, which unfortunatley can happen. If this was the case I’m sure there would be players than you that would be affected, and a big uproar. So before you claim anything and make a fool of yourself, contact support.
Im sure he did contact them you stupid fuck. And so did I. People are entitled to say what they want. This is america you stupid fuck.
I did contact support of course, but thank you so much for your eloquent assessment of the situation, Imoen. I also appreciate the insults, so keep them coming!
It was not an error at all, per the email they just sent me. It is their practice to put a freeze on an account if any kind of payment fails, no matter whether it is a subscription payment or not. This comes directly from Funcom and I am updating the post now. So I’m not sure how that makes me look the fool, but all are welcome to their own opinions. I think that freeze policy is very poor practice on Funcom’s part…but to their credit, they removed the freeze and I sent a very polite thank you email to them for doing so.
Same thing happened to me. But instead i bought the xpac and on the 2nd they charged me 19.99 for the aoc game. And now they wanted to charge me 24.99 for xpac. Same thing rl things came up and i dont have the funds right now to purchase xpac. They froze my account. But if you buy aoc you get a month free. I dont get it and i wont be doing business with them anymore. I called my bank and reported fraud explained the whole thing and he agreed. I am purchasing one thing and getting charged for something else. I will never play or use funcoms services again.
Also I forgot to add this is the second time this has happened.
What he did was take advantage of the funcom offer pre-order item then thought he would be slick get the item have the pre-order not go through snd funcom froze him they should have left your ass frozen.Somehow I am 10000% sure if they didn’t remove the pre-order item from your account that you won’t email them back to tell them to remove it.GO cry somewhere else anyone relying on gamecards and not enough funds on there CC to pay for a 24 buck expansion should get a better fucking job or get 1 job and stop playing mmogs until you can afford them.
All right, more personal insults from the high and mighty! Keep em coming, guys. I love it.
I’m shocked that you didn’t think this would happen. You removed your funds from your account to not pay for an item that was pre-ordered and then you’re shocked to find your account frozen when the transaction tried to go thru? Amazing thing isn’t it? It’s called insufficient funds. Next time, cancel your pre-order the proper way by contacting customer service and don’t do it the day of. Any business would do the same thing. And Bryan, your as much of a fool as this guy. Seriously, this is some of the dumbest complaints I ever heard. Learn to do banking properly and learn to cancel things properly. Btw, thank Funcom for teaching you a little about LIFE and banking. Good day sir!
And to add, thier policy is the same policy of every MMORPG game your going to come into. Did you not read the EULA? Funcom just showed you your ERROR, not theirs. Good day again …
Hmmm…well no. It is not the policy for every other MMO to freeze your account if your payment fails for a server transfer…or if your payment fails for name change…or for an expansion…or for anything else unrelated to the actual subscription. They don’t lock down your whole account as Funcom did to mine. I know this because I have been playing MMO a lot longer than you have from what I can tell. Nor does this teach us anything about banking, as I stated clearly that this was not my main bank account.
Also, the money I moved off the account was done literally the day they tried to put through the payment so it was too late to call, the damage was done. An emergency came up in real life and it was unavoidable. Yes, some of us do have real lives. But I am starting to think that the actual facts here mean very little and many of you just want to come here and flame me for criticizing Funcom for their policy.
I have been happy to praise them for other things, such as AOC’s improvement. But here I think their policy was a little silly and I was not pleased, so I chose to write about it. If that is highly offensive to some of you then so be it. *shrugs*
dont bother explaining bro. You were screwed. Just do what im doing and delete your card info and play another crappy mmo. They are all pretty much the same. BTW it’s almost midnight here in cali and I still havent heard back from funcom. Sent them a email this morning at 10am. So yea…
Are you guys stupid fucktards. The man has game time cards his time isnt up. He isnt complaining about not getting the xpac. Hes mad that his account is forzen when he has gametime still active. OMFG America at it’s finest. Yea, I didnt buy the xpac just forget about the 2 months i have left. Now I know why we as Americans are getting pushed around by Wall St. Its because stupid fucks like you say its in the EULA or its common practice. OMFG i give up on humanity.
Thanks for seeing the actual problem here, Bryan. But easy up…no need for swearing.
People are really funny sometimes, though, aren’t they? I updated my post again because Funcom did get back to me and unfroze my account. So like I said, kudos to them for fixing the problem.
You should give them a call tomorrow to see what’s going on with your situation. Just remember to go easy on the Customer Service Rep you talk to, because they aren’t the ones responsible for the decision making. Good luck to ya.
Seems like Funcom could avoid this issue in the future if it offered a way to redact preorders. If you could have cancelled the preorder on their website, then that would have been the end of it (from all I have read here it doesn’t sound like they have a preorder cancellation option). Anyway, glad you fought for and got them to fix your account on this matter. Also hope you will be able to pick up the expansion and play soon, it’s quite fun.
this has also happened to me, but in my case i added a new card to my account to upgrade to the collectors edition. only a $10 charge that failed for whatever reason, Locked (cancelled) my account even though i have 6 months of pre-paid time left. i can completely understand his frustration. sorry if i revived a dead thread/post but i was trying to find info on this problem and this was all i could find. i suppose i play the waiting game now
Im in same boat. I just wanted to buy prem subscribtion, but instead they tried charging me 3×6000 funcom points + prem sub for 163 euro.
There is no way to cancel 3×6000 funcom points for 150euro, which I never added.
Exceptional read!!
This could be this blogs best piece to date.
